چکیده

Pedestal profiles that span the ELM cycle have been obtained and used to test the idea that the pedestal pressure gradient in MAST is limited by the onset of Kinetic Ballooning Modes (KBMs). During the inter-ELM period of a regularly type I ELM-ing discharge on MAST, the pressure pedestal height and width increase together while the pressure gradient increases by only 15 % during the ELM cycle. Stability analyses show that the pedestal region over which infinite-n ballooning modes are unstable also broadens during the ELM cycle. To test the relationship between the width of the region that is unstable to n = ∞ ideal magnetohydrodynamic ballooning modes and KBMs the gyrokinetic code, GS2, has been used for microstability analysis of the edge plasma region in MAST. The gyrokinetic simulations find that KBM modes with twisting parity are the dominant microinstabilities in the steep pedestal region, with a transition to more slowly growing tearing parity modes in the shallower pressure gradient core region immediately inside the pedestal top. The region over which KBMs are unstable increases during the ELM cycle, and a good correlation is found between the regions unstable to KBMs and infinite-n ideal ballooning modes.

Electromagnetic gyro-fluid simulations with BOUT++

Transport at the pedestal top is important for the inter-ELM pedestal dynamics. Linear gyrokinetic analysis of the pedestal during an ELM cycle on MAST has shown kinetic ballooning modes to be unstable at the knee of the pressure profile and in the steep pedestal region whilst microtearing modes (MTMs) and electron temperature gradient modes (ETGs) dominate in the shallow gradient region inboar...

Intermediate-k Density and Magnetic Field Fluctuations During Inter-ELM Pedestal Evolution in MAST

Measurements of local density and magnetic field fluctuations near the pedestal top, conditionally-averaged over the ELM cycle, have been made in MAST. A Doppler backscattering (DBS) system installed at MAST was used to measure intermediate-k (k⊥ρi ≈ 3 − 4) density fluctuations at the top of the pedestal. A novel diagnostic technique combining DBS with crosspolarization scattering (CP-DBS) enab...

Integrated Simulation of ELM Energy Loss and Cycle in Improved H-mode Plasmas

The energy loss due to an edge localized mode (ELM) crash and its cycle have been studied by using an integrated transport code with a stability code for peeling-ballooning modes and a transport model of scrape-off-layer (SOL) and divertor plasmas. The integrated code reproduces a series of ELMs with the following characteristics. The ELM energy loss increases with decreasing the collisionality...

Initial results of H-mode edge pedestal turbulence evolution with quadrature reflectometer measurements on DIII-D

High-resolution quadrature reflectometer measurements of density fluctuation levels have been obtained on DIII-D for H-mode edge pedestal studies. Initial results are presented from the L–H transition to the first ELM for two cases: (i) a low pedestal beta discharge, in which density turbulence in the pedestal has little change during the ELM-free phase, and (ii) a high pedestal beta discharge ...

Evolution of the H-mode edge pedestal between ELMs

The evolution of edge pedestal parameters between edge-localized modes (ELMs) is analyzed for an H-mode DIII-D [J Luxon, Nucl. Fusion 42, 612 (2002)] discharge. Experimental data are averaged over the same sub-intervals between successive ELMs to develop data that characterize the evolution of density, temperature, rotation velocities, etc. over the interval between ELMs. These data are interpr...
